College Faculty and Staff

DSC_0204Jon has been speaking to College Instructors and Staff Members since 1992. He started his college career as an adjunct faculty member in 1992, and since 1996, has been a Senior Lecturer at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana. He has also served the university administratively as the Director of Developmental Mathematics, Assistant Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, and as the Executive Director of Retention Initiatives. Jon’s unique faculty and staff experiences provide him with a broad base of experience to speak with both audiences.

Jon focuses on providing personal and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff members who are not afforded the same opportunities for professional growth as tenured/tenure-track instructors and high level administrators. Focusing on the practical applications of time management, productivity, and classroom practices, Jon mixes humor with 25 years of classroom and administrative experience to provide an entertaining, informative, and valuable learning experience to his audience.

Slow Down and Listen: Who Do You Hear? (60-90 minutes)

We live in a noisy world. Everyone is clamoring for our attention. According to the EPA, the average American Household owns an average of 23 electronic devices. Whether it’s a cell phone, iPad, laptop, iPod, big screen TV, or even just the urgency in our mind, society wants our attention…and they want it now. In this session, Jon takes a look at how internal and external demands that eat away at our time can be overcome by examining the people of influence in our lives and discerning who truly has our best interests at heart.

Failure: Your First Key to Success (60-90 minutes)

Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Steve Jobs, and hundreds of other leaders have reached the pinnacle of success after experiencing the depths of extreme failure, yet the mantra of society is that failure is not acceptable. In this session, Jon examines the failures and subsequent successes of great leaders as motivation and inspiration for instructors to push through failure to achieve the success that they desire.

TED Education: The Nitty-Gritty of TED© Talks (60-75 minutes)
Amidst the chaos of planning and delivering an effective learning experience, we often find ourselves struggling to remain motivated and energized. Why do we teach? What must we do to reach an ever changing population of students?
In this session, Jon discusses TED© talks:

• What are TED© talks?
• How can we use them to enrich our personal lives?
• How can they help us to develop professionally as teachers?

Upward Mobility: From Part-Time to Party Time! (60-75 minutes)
You’ve been an adjunct for years, racking up miles on your car as you shuttle from campus to campus, teaching a course or two here and there, never certain where you will teach next semester. You want to settle into a full-time position, but you’re not sure how. A full-time position seems so far away, but it could be closer than you think. In this session, Jon shares strategies for moving from part-time tourist to full-time inhabitant, from transient to permanent, from uncertainty to security.
